Desalination: Necessity or Indulgence

With large portions of the population facing water shortages, many are turning to desalination as an answer. Is it worth it? While the energy requirements are immense there are almost  48 billion gallons of water for each person on earth. Even at the fifty percent efficiency rates that Reverse Osmosis boasts, that is 24 billion gallons of freshwater for food, drinking, sanitation. With a modest lifestyle, that could last generations, but it might be at the cost of ecosystems. Learn More.
